Our Vision & Future

An independent Nation and an interconnected community, working together for all generations.

Ulkatcho First Nation envisions an independent Nation and an interconnected community — one where all generations thrive together. Our vision is rooted in the land, guided by our Elders, and carried forward by our youth. The following priorities guide our path forward.

1

Self-Determination and Strong Governance

Ulkatcho First Nation is committed to building governance structures that reflect the values and aspirations of its members. This includes moving toward greater self-determination, developing community-driven policies, and ensuring transparent and accountable leadership.

The Nation's governance vision includes strengthening the role of Elders in decision-making, increasing youth participation in community governance, and developing institutions that serve the unique needs of the Ulkatcho people.

2

Health, Wellness, and Cultural Vitality

The Health & Wellness Plan 2022–2027 outlines a comprehensive approach to community health that integrates traditional healing practices with contemporary health services. Mental health, addictions support, and cultural healing are priorities.

Cultural vitality is inseparable from health and wellness. The Nation supports cultural programs, land-based healing, and the revitalization of traditional practices as essential components of community well-being.

3

Economic Development and Opportunity

Through the Ulkatcho Group of Companies and strategic partnerships, the Nation is building economic capacity that creates jobs, generates revenue, and supports community programs. Economic development is guided by the principle that prosperity must be shared and sustainable.

Key initiatives include forestry operations, clean energy projects, and Alliance Agreements with industry partners. The Nation is also exploring tourism, cultural enterprises, and technology-based opportunities.

4

Environmental Stewardship

The protection of Ulkatcho traditional territory — its lands, waters, and wildlife — is a sacred responsibility. The Nation actively participates in environmental assessments, land use planning, and wildlife management to ensure that development does not compromise the health of the territory.

Climate change, resource extraction, and development pressures are ongoing challenges. The Nation's approach combines traditional ecological knowledge with contemporary science to make informed decisions about land and resource management.

5

Dakelh Language Revitalization

The Dakelh language is the foundation of Ulkatcho identity. With relatively few fluent speakers remaining, language revitalization is an urgent priority. The Nation supports Elder-led language programs, documentation projects, and the integration of Dakelh into community education.

The goal is to create a generation of new speakers who can carry the language forward, ensuring that the knowledge, stories, and worldview embedded in Dakelh are not lost.

6

Strength Through Elders and Youth

The future of Ulkatcho First Nation depends on the connection between Elders and youth. Elders carry the knowledge, language, and cultural authority of the Nation. Youth carry the energy, creativity, and determination to build a strong future.

Programs that bring Elders and youth together — on the land, in the classroom, and in governance — are essential to the Nation's vision of an interconnected community working together for all generations.
